“The lowdown on tears: Why some cry easily, others don’t cry, and how to handle all those tears.”

It starts with a quivering lip. Or maybe blinking faster and faster to keep the wetness from escaping.

Before you know it, you’re getting teary — again.

You may be one of those people who cry at the drop of a hat — not to mention weddings, birthday parties, your kids’ school plays, and the humane society public service announcements showing those adorable dogs in need of new homes.

Or you may be the type who can’t remember when you last cried.

Either way, crying often catches the often-teary eyed or the usually stoic off guard — striking at a time or place where you don’t want to weep — and others don’t want to watch you weep.

Just ask New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick, normally stoic, who got teary as he announced the retirement of his star linebacker Tedy Bruschi. Or Hilary Clinton, whose tears one night on the 2008 presidential campaign trail were splashed across TV screens.

Football coaches and politicians crying in public may reflect a society that’s evolving to become a bit more comfortable with emotion. But crying in front of people can still be awkward for the person crying and people around them.

What’s behind our crying? Why do some people cry so much more or less readily than others? And what’s the best way to handle all those tears? Is there a way not to cry when it’s totally inappropriate, such as in response to your boss declining that request for a raise?  Researchers and therapists who study crying share what they’ve learned — and what still puzzles them.

“Avoid grocery stores’ marketing tricks”

If you ever leave the grocery store with a slight sense of bewilderment at what you’ve just bought, you are not alone.

Despite the utilitarian look of most grocers’ shelves, careful science goes into deciding how to display the thousands of items each store carries and how to make them appeal to consumers.

Marketers tug shoppers toward items they did not intend to buy (thus the bewilderment) with package design, shelf placement, tie-ins and temporary price cuts.

“You can call it exploitation or you can call it savvy marketing,” says Tod Marks, a senior editor at Consumer Reports who is known as Tightwad Tod on his blog on the magazine’s Web site.

Kit Yarrow, a consumer psychologist who teaches at Golden Gate University, said marketers have put more thought into grocery stores than any other type of store because they see an opportunity in the monotony of shopping for necessities.

“It is really a blind spot for most people once they get into the grocery store because it’s a very habituated activity for them,” Yarrow said. “It’s also relatively boring so they don’t want to put in as much thought as they put into a new handbag or a new suit.”

“There’s not much that happens by accident in there,” Yarrow added.

Until this week, many veterinarians asserted that it was a myth that house cats could catch the deadly H1N1 flu from their owners.

Those veterinarians, along with other health experts, are revising their views after an Iowa Department of Public Health announcement Wednesday that the virus has been confirmed in an indoor 13-year-old cat, which likely contracted the illness from two flu-sick humans in its home.

Although all of the victims have since recovered, this latest H1N1 animal case puts the focus on humans as the primary carriers of the illness, which experts don’t even want to call “swine” flu anymore.

“We’re seeing reverse zoonosis, with the virus jumping from people to animals,” Alfonso Torres told Discovery News, explaining that several ferrets have also been infected, resulting in at least one pet ferret death in Nebraska.

If you bought a Windows Vista-based PC in the last four months, and you’re now eagerly awaiting the launch of Windows 7, consider restraining your excitement.

While many major computer manufacturers have promised free upgrades from Windows Vista to Windows 7 for anyone who bought a PC after June 26, 2009, what you don’t pay in hard cash could still cost you in headaches.

I’m not just talking about the upgrade process itself, which can be exhausting. Glancing through the upgrade information pages for participating manufacturers, several red flags went up. Here are some things to watch out for when it’s time to claim your Windows 7 Upgrade Option:

1. Getting the Upgrade Could Take a While

I’ve just upgraded my main notebook computer to Windows 7. The process took four hours, and despites a few minor glitches, was pretty much painless.

So I’m using Win 7 now. It’s a little faster and a little prettier than Vista. (Check out PC World’s Windows 7 review for the specifics.) But as I explore Microsoft’s latest operating system, I find myself wondering why Windows 7 Home PremiumUpgrade, the main version for consumers, costs $120.

Will home users pay that price? I’m betting they won’t. True, some Microsoft diehards will line up on October 22 to grab the first copies of Win 7, but most consumers will spot the price tag and walk away.

As much as I like what Microsoft’s done with Windows 7, the improvements don’t warrant such a steep fee, particularly for home users upgrading from the much-maligned Vista.

FRANCE has the best quality of life out of Europe’s biggest countries, while Britain has the worst despite having the highest incomes, a study says.

British workers can expect to spend three years longer at work and die two years younger than their French counterparts, while they pay above the European average for fuel, food, alcohol and cigarettes, the study by uSwitch.com released today said.

The consumer website used existing research from different sources to compare 17 lifestyle factors in France, Spain, Denmark, the Netherlands, Germany, Poland, Italy, Sweden, Ireland and Britain.

It revealed that Britain had the highest net household income - at STG35,730 ($62,547) a year it is STG10,000 ($17,505) above the European norm - but much of this is spent on a higher cost of living.

Britain is the second most expensive country in Europe for unleaded petrol, while diesel is 20 per cent above the European average.
